Get deep into the sweet spot with a mouth-wateringly wild combination of five musical sorcerors, coming together for a night of cross-Atlantic magic on the Cube Cinema stage.
The fulcrum for the evening comes from downtown New York in the form of Peter Zummo – a minimalist and a whole lot more. Performing on trombone, synths and vocals, his highly regarded, supremely emotive compositions are laced with hazy, soft melodies and the ghosts of disco dubs. His beguiling, enveloping music and fierce inventiveness mirrors that of his frequent collaborator, the late and very wonderful Arthur Russell. Tonight finds Zummo forging musical bonds with artists from near and far, all bound by a shared musical language.
Completing the New York contingent are Ernie Brooks (bass and acoustic guitars, voice) and Bill Ruyle (hammer dulcimer, percussion). These three have collaborated with each other since the late 1970s, as well as serving time in such legendary outfits as The Lounge Lizards (Zummo) and The Modern Lovers (Brooks).
Meanwhile, two distinctive protagonists from UK dance music’s outer spheres bring textures, beats and live processing: one of the most individual record selectors from Scotland and part of the Optimo DJ duo, Keith McIvor aka JD Twitch reissued Peter’s classic Zummo With An X LP via the label strand of the Optimo empire, while Ralph Cumbers (Bass Clef) beams in from London, a massive Zummo/Russell fan who knows his way around a trombone .
This cross-generational band fits with Zummo’s preference for keeping an edge, seeking to pull beauty out of chaos and music from disparate sounds both abrasive yet refined.
