Matana Roberts & Kelly Jayne Jones:
playthecube Residency

The latest in the playthecube residency series finds US composer/saxophonist Matana Roberts and UK sound artist Kelly Jayne Jones developing and premiering a brand new collaboration at The Cube, plus a film screening, artist discussion and workshop all in the mix too.

More

Matana Roberts and Kelly Jayne Jones are artists from disparate backgrounds, finding affinity in practices charged by fiercely personal philosophies on sound and its potential within a patchwork of genre, texture and meaning. As the culmination of their playthecube residency, they will premiere a new live collaborative work informed by deeply expressive playing, tactile electro-acoustic interplay and a broader shared politics of resistance/defiance.

As part of the residency, The Cube hosts a screening of Story Telling For Earthly Survival, a crafty documentary portrait of the highly original thinker Donna Haraway, whose work around gender, identity and technology sinks into difficult universal issues, capturing hope where it might seem to be lost. The screening is followed by an informal discussion with Matana Roberts and Kelly Jayne Jones led by Teresa Dillon, Professor of City Futures at UWE, exploring the intersection of Haraway's ideas with their own idiosyncratic hybrid art practices.

Plus Kelly Jayne Jones leads a Collective Improvisation workshop at Arnolfini. Taking inspiration from John Zorn’s Game Pieces the workshops will take an experimental and collaborative approach to composition with participants drawing upon a range of objects, methods, activities and processes along with mindfulness techniques to consider what it is to create sound together. Exploring the spaces within and between improvisation and composition as a means of collective creative expression, workshop participants will engage in processes of communal creativity inspiring interpersonal transformation as a political act.
